Thinning hair is a difficulty that many people live with. The loss of hair thickness can be a devastating event, but there are things you can do about it! 1. Iron Boost
One of the first things to know about thinning hair is what causes it, in order to be able to prevent it or reduce the symptoms. If you are a vegan, vegetarian, or anemic, you may find that an iron deficiency is the cause of your hair loss. You can boost your iron intake simply by adding leafy greens and beans, as well as red meat. Or check with a medical professional to see if you need to take an iron supplement in pill form to stop your hair loss.
2. Scalp Massage
Some professionals suggest that hair loss may be due to a lack of circulation in the scalp. Some believe that a bit of scalp massage can bring circulation while promoting exfoliation and new cell growth. Try some coconut oil or Argan oil, rubbing in a circular motion for a few minutes prior to shampooing.
3. Over-the-Counter Medications
At this point, the only FDA approved treatment for the loss of hair is minoxidil, used topically (think Rogaine). Available in liquid or foam, this medication helps to lengthen the phase in which the hair grows. Applied twice a day, minoxidil produces better results in women than in men, but is worth a try if you are struggling with thinning hair. Health risks for this treatment should be considered prior to use.
4. Hair Transplant
More extreme than some options, hair transplants are often used for men who are suffering from male pattern baldness. Typically the hair is removed from parts of the scalp that have thicker hair and placed in areas that are sparser. This works well on some people who have very short hair.
5. Check Your Hormones
Sometimes a hormone imbalance may be the cause of thinning hair. Males and females can both experience genetic pattern baldness. Other causes of temporary hair loss in women can be hormonal as well, during seasons such as pregnancy, menopause, or discontinuation of birth control hormone treatments. Check with a medical professional to see what options are available to balance out these hormones.
