Sometimes life takes us far away from our hometowns, and it can be incredibly expensive to get back to them to visit friends and family. That’s the case for an Irish man who just received a huge tip from a caring customer.
Ben Millar, 22, is an Irish waiter who lives in Houston, Texas with his girlfriend who is pregnant with the couple’s first child. Millar has not been home to Northern Ireland in more than two years, according to ABC News. He was working this past Saturday, November 19, when a customer who often visits Ireland was sat in his section.
The customer – a man named Jeffrey – ended up leaving the Irish waiter a $750 tip on a meal that totaled $182.87. Jeffrey explained that he and his family traveled to Ireland pretty regularly. “I jokingly said, ‘I wish I could go back that often to see my family,'” Millar told media outlets. “I thought nothing of it, and we all joked after. The night went on, and I proceeded to give good service and talk to them.”
Well, that good service combined with Millar’s honesty about missing his family inspired the concerned diner to leave a generous tip with a special note that you can see in the Facebook post that has now gone viral. “Hopefully, this can get you back to Ireland for the holidays,” Jeffrey wrote. Millar said: “My initial reaction was shouting, ‘Holy s—!'” His girlfriend, Taryn Keith, was so touched that the stranger cared enough to help her family that she shared it online with the message, “My boyfriend got this tip last night at work. He’s from Ireland and is trying to take us back there once Killian is born so we can meet his family. Thought I would share it to show everyone that’s there is not only hate out there. Truly blessed.”
Awww. Jeffrey’s kindness is exactly the kind of news we need during Thanksgiving week. Helping others is a big part of the holiday season, and it can be hard to remember that when we’re busy working, traveling, cooking, and scheduling family time. Millar told reporters that after the initial shock had worn off, he showed the receipt with the fantastic tip to his friend who has worked at the restaurant for more than 11 years. The veteran waiter told Millar that he had “never had a tip” like the one Jeffrey left for the server, his girlfriend, and their soon-to-be-here baby, Killian. Millar explained that he is going to save the $750 tip for when the baby arrives. Then he’s going to take his Texas family home to Belfast to meet his family.
