Professional boxer, Floyd Mayweather, reveals the jaw-dropping fee he will be receiving for his highly anticipated fight against Irish mixed martial artist and professional boxer, Conor McGregor – giving meaning to his nickname, “Money.”
Boxing fans around the globe continue to countdown the days until the big, August 26 fight between Mayweather and McGregor, which is sure to be the most lucrative fight of all times. It is expected that both fighters will be walking away with a hefty paycheck regardless of the outcome, with a rumor that each boxer makes around $100 million from each fight.
However, in a recent interview with Showtime, Mayweather dispelled this rumor with a more accurate and even more eye-watering figure. In an interview on a documentary series titled “All Access: Mayweather vs McGregor,” the undefeated American boxer said:
“…am I the highest-paid athlete out there? And just coming back? We not talking about no contract. We not talking about no contract for no 4 years, or no contract for no 5 years. I can do it in 36 minutes. $300 million or better. In 36 minutes.”
Based on that statement, it appears the braggadocios fighter did not get his nickname in vein. If that figure is broken down, that comes out to an earning of at least $8 million per minute.
But, before you are so quick to feel defeated by how Mayweather’s income compares to yours, consider what the experts say:
Recently, ESPN analysts Darren Rovell and Dan Rafael have claimed that based on the new projections, the upcoming fight between Mayweather and McGregor is actually estimated to gross less than the total of the 2015 Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao bout – which was surrounded by hype only to end up being about as exciting as watching your neighbor mow the lawn.
The experts suggest that the Mayweather vs. McGregor bout will only make around $606 million, which is still $17 million shy of the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.
So, it looks like Floyd “Money” Mayweather might need to start working on some recalculations…
But, aside from his earnings from this fight, Mayweather is also known as “Money” because he loves to show off the amount of cash he has – he owns his own promotions company, creatively named Mayweather Promotions.
The undefeated American boxer frequently posts pictures of himself counting his cash, in addition to bragging about the amount of money he can drop on luxury items such as expensive watches.
Mayweather continued on in the documentary to say, “I got money, all in hundreds. I can’t say what Conor McGregor is doing. I can’t say what the UFC is paying him, but every month I make millions.
They call me money Mayweather for a reason, I’m going to get it regardless.”
