The Landfill Harmonic is an orchestra of children in Catuera, Paraguay. But those are no ordinary instruments they are using. Created from the rubbish dumped in what makes up most of Catuera, are everything from cellos and violins to guitars and saxophones.
Made from tin cans and pieces of broken wood, the instruments and music are inspiring hope in a city where the natives live a hand-to-mouth existence. Participating in the orchestra is encouraging optimism in the young people and they are turning to music instead of a life of crime. Many are able to get out of Catuera and tour the world with their instruments and make better lives for themselves.
